Hello Timmy,The stock muffler accepts an 1 3/4 in OD tailpipe and is the same size inlet.  Tailpipe fits inside the muffler outlet.  When I went looking for stock mufflers(2) I checked NAPA and all other suppliers online.  NO ONE (regular parts places)sells a stock muffler for this far back.  TEE-BIRD.com does at $85.00.  Most guys apparently go glass-pack for replacement.  I managed to get a complete dual system including NOS FORD mufflers from a fellow here in Canada for a total price of $300.00 including mufflers at $60.00 each but they were the last ones he had not that you would buy from up here.  The cost to send to Canada was a turn-off to me as far as buying from US supplier.I   buy all of my needed parts from Tee-Bird but they can be mailed.Exhaust wasn't.  If you are stuck and do want a stock muffler call Tee-bird at 1-800-423-3723. They're a terrific bunch and if you explain your situation I know they would go out of their way for you.  They are in West Chester PA.  They also stock hangars (original style) and most other exhaust items.  They have a tremendous # of items for the 54-56 Ford which is their speciality.  Hope this helps.  Mark

Timmy: If you want a stock replacement 1-3/4" muffler, Concours Parts, Nevada lists a single system one as # B4A 5230-B. However, you might want to consider going up to a 2" system & using a Turbo type muffler, which will likely be more efficient & sound better, with out being annoyingly loud, which is likely with most glass packs.

I’ve been using the long mufflers from another application on my ’55 Customline which still gives the total quite that the stock mufflers provide.  I had the tailpipe sizes upgraded to the 2" Police Interceptor size and are hung under the car using the factory dual exhaust brackets.  As Mark mentions, the original pipe size was 1 3/4".  The muffler shop came up with the mufflers so I can’t say what the original application is but they are similar in size to the originals.  With the total quite provided by the mufflers, it’s nice to hear the radio at Interstate speeds.

Hello Timmy,You said the muffler you have is wrong. If its a case of wrong size inlet or outlet a muffler shop could fix you up with a reducer quickly. If you need dimensions for the original muffler if you are going the route Ted did I can give you those off the NOS ones I have.On Ebay there is a NOS Ford replacement muffler that comes with adapters because it replaces several applications frm 53-56.priced at $30.00 no bids.Regards Mark
