Did a 57 292 with a Holley 4 barrel come with a spacer between carb and manifold?

Paul:

The '57 would have had a spacer, 1/2" thick, under the carb.  I have seen both phenolic and aluminum spacers, couldn't vouch which, or both, were original.

Wood !!!! as in wood that is for making funiture and building houses?????? I hope your engine doesnt huff and puff and burn your manifold spacer down.

Jeez, i wood (get it) prefer to see other materials supporting my fuel delivery apparatus other than wood. Or am I off the planet?

No offense but I dont see wood in the performance parts catalouge of Edelbrock, Holley, Weiand and Offenhauser, not sure that this is a long term solution.

A hard dense wood such as Purple Heart or Mock Orange would make a very good spacer. It has excellent insulation qualities. I had a "B" intake (let James Potter have it yesterday) that came off a 1963 292 HD truck engine. It looks just like the 1957 intake, it had a Holley with vac governor.

The Nascar racers have been using wood for carburetor spacers for a good number of years in that there are some unique insulating properties with the wood that are not found in plastic, phenolic, or aluminum.  And of course the type of wood would also be important in this regard as you’d obviously not use pine or similar soft wood.

A quick internet search finds that Moroso offers at least four different carb spacers manufactured from wood.

Well I'll be a monkeys uncle, you learn something everyday.

Wood wood be the last thing I wood have thought you wood have made a spacer out of given the heat and fuel that it is exposed to. Obviously choice of wood must be the trick. Pinochio  was made of oak i think....
