Turbines were all the rage in the 1950s , they never went anywhere because the were to expensive to make, needed a lot of service, and used too much fuel.

As a teen, the people across the street from us had one of those copper colored Chrysler turbine cars for a while (one of the families chosen for testing). I remember the sound of them warming it up before driving off. I thought it was pretty bogus, but looking back now I wish I would asked for a ride!
