Hi all, I have a ’54 Merc Monterey. The original 256 is history and has been replaced with a (I believe) 312. It’s being fed by an electric fuel pump and the mechanical pump has been bypassed. I would prefer to stay with the mechanical pump but I spent the afternoon reversing things (bypassed the electric pump and hooked up the mechanical one) and the mechanical pump doesn’t seem to work. The tag on the mechanical pump reads “5042” and there is no clue as to manufacturer. I searched for rebuild kits or a rebuilt pump but can’t find any reference to a “5042” fuel pump. Do I have the correct pump? Where can I get a rebuilt pump or rebuild kit? In the meantime, back to the electric pump. Thanks, Ed

A Holley pump 12-390-11 or a Carter pump for a 390 FE Ford will work on a 292-312 engine. I have found the outside mounted electric pumps don't last and food for getting stranded. The mechanical pumps can be ordered from your parts store or ordered from Summit or Jegs.

Certain FE pumps have a fuel filter canister (replaceable filter) as part of the pump. I'm not sure on the year of the application, but it's for a 360 CI pickup.

If your 54 Merc still has vacuum wipers, note that the 360 F.E. pump will likely not have the vacuum assist feature of the original pump..

You need to check that the engine has a 1955 and up timing cover to be able to use the FE fuel pump. If the engine was refitted with the ’54 timing cover, then it takes the upside down mounted pump which can be identified by using 5/16-18 bolts in which to fasten it to the timing cover. 1955 and newer timing covers use 3/8-16 bolts for fuel pump fastening and the pumps are mounted more conventionally with the inlet/outlet in the lower position.
