The recent post about the crank damper seal made me think of another ugly leak my bird had when I brought it home. Under the hood, this car had a half inch of gunk on virtually every surface - hood, firewall, air cleaner, engine, tranny - everything headed toward the rear under the car. It was like the ultimate fire hazard. And I had just driven it home from Sedona in 108° heat.
Trying to sanitize it - I found all sorts of bad things left me by the previous ninety-some year old owner. The major source of the oil appeared to be the power steering pump/reservoir - a hose fitting? He had been simply adding fluid since some time in the seventies. The hose and hose fitting ultimately checked out OK - but up under the bottom of the reservoir I found the problem. While trying to tighten the fittings for the umpteenth time a mechanic before me had turned a wrench up into the bottom of the can - putting a dent in it adjacent to where it seals to the pump. I was unable to flatten the bottom of the can enough to stop the weeping and had to locate another one that wasn't bent.
