Can anyone tell me if a 57 Ford-o-matic is the same as a 56 Fordo? I damaged my FMX/Fordo hybrid and need a new output shaft. I can buy a complete 57 Fordo (more than I want to spend, but I've been looking for 3 weeks) and strip it for parts. I used the 56 Fordo output shaft in my FMX so that I didn't have to change the driveshaft. I need to know if they are the same length and are the splines the same before I buy this tranny. Thanks for any help.

When I bought my 56 the Ford-O-Matic needed some help. We used parts from a 57 Ford-o-matic to repair it. As I remember the output shaft spline count on the 57 was different.

If you can get the yoke it shouldn't be a problem. My 56 Ford-o-matic was water cooled as was the 57.

I believe the lengths are the same, but as Jim said, the splines are different.  I know you have a 9" rear, but if you used the '56 driveshaft, then finding a yoke to fit the splines and also the '56 U joints may be impossible.  I'm not sure they ever made one like that.  But a '57 or later driveshaft should be usable at both ends, but may have to have the length changed.  If you have to go this way, get one that is too long and have it shortened.  Lots cheaper than having it lengthened.  Is the shaft damaged?  If not, I think it can be installed in the '57 or FMX ring gear.

Wish I had a '56 tranny, I'd ship the needed parts to your inlaws and you could pick them up at the family reunion and figure a way to get them smuggled out of the good ol' USA into your backwoods country.

After getting my adapter and E4OD all bolted up to my 292, If I still had my 57 Ford Fairlane, I would look VERY hard at putting an AOD in it now.



It's not cheep but it would REALLY make it a great driver on the highway!

Hey Rob ,

What extension housing are you using ??? I used the FMX on mine . Found out later ,I could have used the FOM .That would have saved me getting a new tail shaft made up . If I was doing another FOM /FMX swap ,I would not go the front imput shaft way .I would go for modifing the front snout on the FMX torque convertor.Only problem with FMX is the weight .FMX autos were still used here in Au up until 1984 .Still concidering my options on auto or 5 speed behind the F100 ??

Thanks for all your responses guys, I appreciate it. Well as the story goes, I found a 56 Fordo up here from a guy close by. I had to pay $300.00 for the tranny, but oh well I now have some more spare parts!  I was hoping to have the car back today, but my tranny guy just called me and told me they shipped him the wrong clutches!!!! AAARRRGGGG! Oh well, we are into week 4 without the car, and he promises I will have it back next week.

Hopefully this is the only issue I have this summer as I need old Vicky to be in top form to out run OLD Lonnie again as Bob has souped up his Merc to compensate for Lon's sleeping on the line! Wink (sorry buddy, had too! )

I would love to go the AOD route, even better would be to go manual 5 speed, but unfortunatley that's not in the funds right now! BigGrin

Good news for me, bad news for OLD Lonnie, Vicky is up and running again!!!!!! BigGrin  Got the tranny all fixed and the old girl is running great. Lets hope I have no more problems from now on!

Now I just have to keep working on my reaction times..............................oh wait, if I race Lon again, I can push the car down the track to win! hehehehehe Tongue
