Can someone shed some light on me regarding sleeves?  I was talking to my father in law about rebuilding my 272 this winter and he mentioned that the Y's were sleeved and I should go to a non sleeved motor??  I tried to search the forum for insight but didn't find what I wanted.  Is there a problem with sleeves?  Do I have them or need them? 

I'm just trying to turn my little ol weak 272 into a nice 292 with a 312 crank, a Y-284S cam and  ECZ-G heads.  Thats not to much to ask is it???

They aren't sleeved from the factory. In the case of most gasoline engines, sleeves are used to repair cylinders which cannot clean up with an overbore due to pitting, cracks, scratches, etc. Maybe he worked on one that had been repaired?

If you are going to bore the 272 to 292 specs make sure the cylinder walls are thick enough. If it turns out thick enough, you could make it a 312. It sounds like you'll have a fun combo.

            If that doesn't work, dig up a 292. They're around and not too expensive.

I assumed sleeving was not an OE thing.  Also assuming my engine has not been rebuilt but I am not sure.  If it is currently sleeved does that mean I can not have it boerd to a 292?  Is sleeving a last ditch option?

It depends on the thickness of the sleeve. Leave that to the discretion of the machine shop. Yours probably will not have any sleeves. First sonic check the block to see if it is possible to overbore as you wish. Ultimately, sleeves can be installed in every bore so that you can make the bores as large as can be fit into the engine. But this is expensive. In my area it's about $150 per cylinder.

       There's a couple of shops in the South Bend area that can do the Sonic Test, also in Ft.Wayne and probably in Warsaw as well. Check John Mummert's parts, you can link to it from this site, he has kits with pistons and cranks available. There's a fair amount of Y activity here in Indiana. Check the "Profiles" section, and you'll see what I mean.
