I advised someone to use the later distributor in a 55 Ford with 6 volt system.This will work even though the distriibutor was for a 12 volt system.Correct?Just want to sure I am not giving out wrong info.Regards Mark

Yes,it will work fine as long as the 6 volt condenser and points are used.

If by later you mean '57 and up, they will also need an appropriate vacuum source to make use of the vacuum advance.

Paul,Will the six volt points interchange on later dist?I thougt there was a difference in the points as far as being opposite in mountng.Thanks Mark

I believe this is sorted out?

The point set used needs to match the distributor/point plate (early style - or late).  Early, the point set base is "straight" - and the late is "curved".

Using the original six volt coil should cut back the current load on the points - I thought I once heard that the six volt system didn't use a ballast resistor? Makes logical sense for that to be so.

Dielectric strength of the "condensor" doesn't change so that should be able to go either way (six or twelve).

Steve,The rebuilt distributor comes with points and cond. installed.Will this work with 6 volts as is?Points just cut the power on and off.Doesn't matter if 6 or 12 volts right?Thanks Mark.Don't want to mislead this guy.

Regarding the lack of ballast resistor on 6 volt system:  it may be correct or not.  My '54 Ford tractor 6 volt systme came with ballast resistor.  Maybe it was not necessary, but maybe it was.  Needless to say the 54 is 12 volt now.

I put the 57 up distributor on my 239 still 6 volts. Use the points and condenser that come with the the distributor. Using my 6 volt coil. She fires pretty good.
