As Hurricane John alluded to, Joe died in Jan. 1964 in an accident at the Riverside 500 in CA. That season started in Nov.'63 & he was leading the points at the time. He was a former two time NASCAR points champ. If I recall correctly, Joe did not like the restricted feeling of 5 way seat belts & only used a lap belt. I believe he died of chest & or head injuries.. I think he was driving a Ford, but I'm not sure & I don't have info about his age.

According to his website, he was born in May of 1922. He's have been 44 at his death. He was diving for Bud Moore at Riverside, so you can be sure wasn't in a scrub.

Well, he died January 19th 1964, so he really was 41 years old when he died. Would have been 42 after 29th of May 1964, but...
