Currently starting the process to rebuild the 57 292 in my Fairlane500. The game plane is to go with 1.94 intake and 1.6 exhaust valves. My question is - Can any set of heads be rebuilt to the ECZ-G specs. I know that 1.6 exhaust is not stock ECZ-G size. Thanks in advance.

What heads do you intend to use? You should alresdy have G heads if the original motor is still in the car. Not all heads will be comparable.

heads not only have different valve sizes but also different combustion chamber sizes. Also, many vehicles do not have the complete original engine in them. I just bought an engine out of a 57 that had ECL (1955-1956) heads. Best to define what you have and what you want to build to and then work from there. 113 and 471 heads can be used for good performance. I cannot answer if a head w/ 1.64 intake can be re done to 1.92 intake. TC
You gotta have the right tools and know how to use 'em. TC - Austin, Texas

I think 57 you would have the G heads and you are only asking about enlarging the exhaust valves correct? If so, I have the same question. I brought a set to my machinist and asked him to install 1.6 exhaust but he was worried about installing a seat with a larger valve and hitting the water jacket. Is this a problem Ted, Hoosier?

Billy, Send the heads to Ted or John Mummert, they'll do the 1.60 valves and a three or 5 angle valve job that will be done right. You won't have to argue or fight and probably won't pay much more than your local guy wants.

If I was smart I would have brought a set to Columbus for Ted and saved the shipping but my plans got all screwed up the last minute and I ended up showing up in a Taurus.

buz_mills (9/29/2008) Currently starting the process to rebuild the 57 292 in my Fairlane500. The game plane is to go with 1.94 intake and 1.6 exhaust valves. Thanks in advance. Not all Y heads can take the larger intake valves without problems either with valve shrouding or interference with the spark plug. This is especially true of the later model small valved heads. I’m not necessarily an advocate of the larger than stock “G” or ‘113’ valves even in a performance application due to the valve shrouding issues related to using the larger valves. Just to prove the point, I went out of my way to put the stock 'G' size valves in the heads being used in David Church’s T-Bird engine and instead concentrated heavily on the the porting both on the intakes and the exhaust. As an FYI, these were the heads that were to slated for use on the now defunct Engine Masters Y-Block project. Proper port work can go a long way in lieu of simply putting larger valves in place.

Thanks everyone for the input. My question has been answered. This is what I got out of the reply's. It does matter what heads you start with, and larger valves does not always make a difference. I will find out this weekend what heads are on the Fairlane. My goal is a 80%street/20%strip engine. A couple times a year I just wanna play with yaw'll at the meets.
Ted - I am saving my peso's and will head your way when ready. I'm in Dallas so you're not to far.
Thanks again to everyone.

I have a set of 113 heads just back from the machine shop. Ready to go. Been milled .028. valves installed . They were done right by my cousin at his engine building shop. Stock valves. If you are interested I can sell them to you. E-mail me and we can negotiate. eadgpdhome@msn.com Earl in NC

Ted, I was thinking about just 1.6's on the exhaust because I know these heads (G's and 113's) benefit mostly from opening up the exhaust. On your port work do you measure each runners cc's, do you have a flow bench or can you just go by measuring and eye to get them similar. I have done many snowmobile cylinders and wanted to try my own porting, I have the skills and knowledge but I don't have a flow bench, Can I just use calipers, dividers and other instruments to get the ports all similar or does it have to be more critical than that?
