I do not use any sealer on rear differential gaskets.  Just my own preference as I am always looking at the next time that differential is removed and simply looking at minimizing any clean up that must be done to the mating surfaces. Other comments on this always welcome.

And I am the other end of the spectrum...I've only done it a handful of times, but I usually use Form A Gasket sealer and no actual gasket.

Do '54 Lincolns use a removeable third member or a Dana style with a rear sheet metal cover?

And I use it all - a gasket with a  thin coat of copper RTV on both sides of the gasket. When numerous times screwdrivers have been pounded in to seperate the pig from the housing, it takes it's toll on the housing gasket surface.

John brings up a good point.  While I do not use any sealer on ‘third member’ gaskets, I will sometimes use some kind of sealer on a rear cover gasket depending upon the cover design.  Also keep in mind that if the third member was designed to use a gasket, then installing without the gasket with just sealer can actually have the axles in a slight misalignment with the differential carrier that holds the ring gear.  I trust that made sense.

  Makes perfect sense ...

Damn...never factored in things not lining up without the gasket.  It does make sense.  Thanks Ted...again.
