This block has been bored .060 and was stuck when I got it. Three of the cyclinders have pitts from water damage. Is this an item for the salvage yard or could it be repaired without having to sell the farm to pay the bill?

Have the block sonic checked for cylinder wall thickness. That will tell you how much it can be bored. If it sonic's ok then have it magnafluxed for cracks. Although many of the "racers" prefer the stronger web in a 292 block. Chuck in NH

Might be cheaper to find another block. Even if the sonic check says it is ok to overbore, you will have to order a custom set of pistons because you are already at .060 over. The other option is to sleeve the whole block. In my neighborhood, that's about $1200.



Are you sure it's a 312? If it's a 292 you are probably in luck.

I believe you can still get .080 over pistons but if you have deep rust in your cylinders it may not make that.  There are still a lot of good 292 blocks to be found, if I were you I'd look for one of those and take your 312 cranks mains down to 2.498" to fit it.  Better setup all around in my opinion.

Thanks to all who replied to my question on the pitted 312 block. I just did not want to junk this block without your opinions. I do have a 292 out of a 1959 pick up that is complete but also stuck and have not torn that one down yet. So I don't know the condition of that block. Just trying not to have too many pieces scattered all over my garage. I will probably go with the 312 crank turned to the 292 spec's. I have gathered quite a few parts on Ebay over the last 3-4 years and plan to build a warmed up Y-Block for my 56 Vic. Back in the 60's I built a 1941 Ford Super Deluxe Coupe for the drag strip with a blown Y-Block. I just want to build one more Y-Block to see if I can still remember how to do it. I am getting on up there in age so it's now or never. Thanks again G.S.

Cool!, That's what its all about here!. Here's my 292 w 312 crank. It was a blast doing it. I'm thinking about doing another.
