Probably not unless we can fit "normal" lifters. But then they probably wouldn't let us run because it's not stock.

Y-Guys Davis & Charlie       The "Challenge" this year had some

                   idea's that I'd never thought about.(I ain't no engine

                   builder...)The 400M that won, those guys had a lot

                   time and $$$ in that deal. The tight lobe seperation

                   and hi-ratio rockers were things you don't see or read

                   about every day. I'm sure Ted, Frank, and others have

                   seen such, but I enjoy reading and trying to learn more

                   each day.   Maybe  a "Y" one day but?????????

I can't find the post but I think it was last year that they said basically the Y Block is not allowed. Obviously, those exact words weren't used. It's because mushroom tappets are not allowed and they won't make an exception for an engine that came from the factory that way.

The 2009 rules format hasn’t been published for general viewing yet.  I did send the rules committee a request for a general change in the rules and it reads as follows:  2009 rules revision: Mushroom tappets are acceptable if they are/were oem equipped in the production engine being used for the competition.  ie. The 292/312 Ford Y-Blocks.  

 

Here’s the link to the Y buildup for the 2007 EMC competition that was eventually disallowed due to the mushroom lifter rule.  Doing a search on this site using Engine Masters Competition as the key words will net several discussions regarding the subject.  The 2007 EMC Y shortblock has been relegated to the storage building but the top end of that engine including the nicely ported posted G heads, reworked and modified Blue Thunder intake manifold, Dove 1.6 roller rocker arms, and Smith Brothers pushrods are currently on the 314 CID Y engine in the Church Brothers ’55 T-Bird.

When the Church Bros., told me about the engine, they left out a few items, You let the cat out of the bag..

That is one fine running T-Bird/Y-Block..

Brother and I own/operate 1957 Ford Fairlane 312/4x2 and two 1963 Falcons 302 rollers carburated 600cfm, FE427 sitting in shed..

Will have to wait and see what the new rules format will be which suppose to be published after January 1st.  After being on the alternate list for two years running, it’s going to be a hard call to make another attempt at this as there is a considerable amount of time and expense in preparing an engine that is designed specific for this competition.

And I thought that was common knowledge.  Unless plans change, that particular engine will make its way into my ’57 racecar while David Church’s T-Bird gets another step change in performance.

Not having the values generated by both entries in front of me, it would be an educated guess on my part that the 401 Olds did not make three back to back good pulls.  Here’s the actual text from the rules for how the scores are calculated..

 

Competition pulls will consist of three, consecutive, acceleration pulls starting at 2,500 rpm and ending at 6,500 rpm.  Then, "average torque corrected to SAE specs" (recorded to one decimal place) from each of the three competition pulls will be added together and divided by three (the resulting average of corrected torque will be recorded to one decimal place).  The "average horsepower corrected to SAE specs" (recorded to one decimal place) from the three competition pulls will be added together and divided by three (the resulting average of corrected horsepower will be recorded to one decimal place).  To compensate for the varied engine displacements, the average torque and average horsepower from the competition pulls, as stated above (recorded to one decimal place), will be added together (the sum will be recorded to 1 decimal place) then divided by the CLAIMED cubic inch displacement of the engine (refer to ENGINE, displacement for proper cubic inch to be claimed), giving average horsepower and average torque per cubic inch to four significant digits (i.e., 2.345). The quotient of these numbers multiplied by 1000 will determine the engine’s score, represented as a whole number. (i.e. 2345) Claiming a cubic inch less than actual calculated cubic inch as stated in the ENGINE, displacement section of these rules, shall result in disqualification. Claiming a cubic inch 5 or more cubic inches greater than actual calculations shall result in disqualification.

 

Summarized, the final score is the average torque and horsepower from three consecutive pulls and although an engine can have an extremely good single pull, if not backed up by two more similar pulls, the overall score will suffer.
