Are the intake bolts strong enought to pull my 272 out of the truck?  I don't have any chains but have car ratchet straps rated at 10,000lbs.  I was thinking of putting 2 under the intake and liftign the engine from there.  Will this work or are there other suggestions.  Thanks

Not exactly to the point of this thread, but as I will have to obtain a "cherry-picker" hoist eventually to pull/swap engine, I am starting to solicit advice. I'm a novice on this subject (last experience was with chain/pulley/swingset back in the 60s):

For example; Local farm store has 2 ton chinese item on sale (expires 12/31) for $175, which includes leveler. It will fit in my trunk (two boxes) so I may save freight, but looks like an all day assembly chore. Swap will happen AFTER paint job, so I must be cautious with tool selection, but I won't need it for more than this one job, thus durability is unimportant.

It's reach looks adequate, but I would like enough height adjustment to allow access under the car while hoisting, if possible. No measurement specs. are provided in instructions. It operates with air pressure/jacking cylinder, not gear crank. As time is NOT pressing, I will likely pass until needs are sorted out.

Any tips/pointers will be appreciated.

The Y will not exceed 700 pounds complete, without the transmission, so pick your lift accordingly.  The one rated 2000 pounds would be with the telescoping boom all the way "in".  Check the ratings with it extended, because that's the way you'll need to use it.  The intake bolts are plenty strong, I have a plate that bolts on the carb flange of the intake with 4 5/16 bolts and have no problems.

Another spot would be through the exhaust manifolds if they are still on.

I have lifted a YBlock by using two intake bolts, one at each corner.

Daniel- Please be careful W/ the Chinese leveler- There was a thread on the HAMB recently by a fella who used one on a 430 Lincoln motor- long story short the paramedics had to extricate his hand from between the motor and firewall when it broke. He's out of commission for many weeks do to the hand injury. Seems there's a world of difference between a S.A.E. rating of 2000 lbs. and the Chinese' interpretation of same.... /Duck

Thanks for all the help.  Merry Christmas to me as I got her pulled out last night at about 11:30.  Now the real fun starts.  Please note that this now will ensure a lot of questions coming from myself.  Thanks again.  Bing

Just a word of advice and CAUTION. After you do pull that engine PLEASE use a 4 FOUR wheel engine stand and NOT a 3 THREE WHEEL. The Y BLOCK is around 625lbs and is VERY UNSTABLE on a THREE WHEEL STAND. Ask me how I know. Pete

I bought a foldable cherry picker from the tool tent that comes around for 100.00 and it worked fine when I pulled my engine and reinstalled it.

Pete, i think after you put another sump and fuel pump on engine that toppled over on that 3 wheel engine stand you knew why a 4 wheeler was more appropriate, was i close? I,ll never forget with a fresh complete 292 engine on 3 wheel stand, shining like new born babe waitng for customer to pickup next morning, i was moving it , the front wheel caught in uneven part of floor and over she went *%#$@*. big hurry to find sump, clean and paint it, another new fuel pump and much panic, result, 4 wheel H-D stands. lesson over.
