at what lift do you have guide clearance and piston issues. 292 with G heads.weekend cruiser.manual trans.

one of the cams recommended .

(236* @ .050"   110* sep 106*in and 114*ex  lobe cent.   with 495" lift)

figures are for 1.5 rockers. been lookin at several brands. this seemed bigger than the average ive seen used.

Not necessarily a lift issue for piston clearance, but how quick they ramp up. Best to degree the cam and clay the pistons before bolting the heads on for good, but I think you should have no problem with that cam and flat-tops. Maybe Ted will chime in on this one.

I forgot to add, As the other guys stated, You will need to cut the guides if it hasn't been done already.   Smile

I think I read some where you may have to trim the top of the valve guide if you have in excess of .450 lift. This is dependant on the valve/retainer combination. Mock up the head, valve and retainer/valve seal combination you will be using. You can a get light springs to replace the real valve springs at a auto parts supply house or hardware store. Use a dial caliper or dial indicator to measure the valve travel allowed before the retainer/keepers bottom out on the top of the valve seal. Allow a minimum of .050 to .075 gap at maximum valve lift. Oh by the way make sure you use the valve seal you are going to use as part of the assembly. Piston to valve clearance can be checked a variety of ways, Assemble the engine with clay on top of the piston (s). This means with torqued heads, used head gaskets ect. Degree the cam in and  set the proper valve gap. Turn the engine over slowly. If binding occurs stop and dissassemble. If no binding occurs measure the thickness of the clay where the valve has made an imprint. Must be at least .050 thickness indicating .050 minimum clearance. Another way to check this is to, again using the assembled engine as before, put a .050 preload on the valve and turn the engine over slowly checking for any binding (check by turning the push rod with your finger tips). If there is any interference have your machinist fly cut the pistons. Another point of possible interference is valve to bore (top of block) Get enough light springs to do all valves on one side. Just bottom the valves  with finger pressure while the engine/ head is assembled. Make sure this is valid for all 8 cylinders. Obviously if you have a lot of room you do not need to check all 8, if they are close check them all. I am assuming all valve stem heights have been equalized.

You can get a feel for how close the valve will come the the block/bore by locating a head gasket properly on the head. Remember the fire ring on the gasket is larger than the bore.

Kenny; John Mummert's guildlines are, over .450 lift requires shortened valve guides; over 480 lift, check for piston clearance; over .500 lift requires reliefs in the block. Type of retainers isn't specified in the ad.
