I did not take / make the time & effort to get all the rusty flakes out of my intake manifold before reinstalling it and doing the initial start up of my recently rebuilt 272...

well, now I've pulled the heads off to replace the freeze plugs and while its off, I'm trying to grind off/smooth off the casting flashing on the outside of the intake manifold... and wondering the best way to clean up the inside of it...

suggestions please...

also, when I get the engine back together, what can I do to "flush out" the water passages in the rest of the motor? could I simply run a garden hose in the top radiator hose and leave the bottom radiator hose off the radiator and let the water run out on the ground for a while till the water looks clear while the motor is running?

I would use the Prestone radiator flush. Also, here's a trick I used on a Model A; cut the foot off of a pair of pantyhose and slip it over the top radiator fitting, then put the radiator hose over that. It will filter the rust flakes out of the water.

And, don't forget to backflush the heater core.

A number of guys on www.fordbarn.com recommend a flush using straight white vinegar. They say it gets all the crud out.

Fill the system with the vinegar, run the car around a day or two, flush good. If you suspect there are flakes that may clog the radiator, the nylon stocking/pantyhose thing mentioned above is a good idea.

Y-Guys        Be sure to destroy the panty-hose package; the wife

may not go for the idea  that you used them on your engine....

Second thought, it could be a good conversation piece,

when the 'buds' come over to help out!

I've heard that some guys up north wear panty hose underneath their jeans like long-johns. Keeps the legs warm, eh?

some of you old farts (and I consider myself one) may not know that the ladies don't really wear panty hose or nylons much these days, so if I ask the Mrs for an old pair, she just may put an end to this "project"...!

but thanks for the ideas...

now, if I can just figure out how to buy that much vinegar!!
