I'm just curious of the best way to hook up my motor when removing it from the fairlane... I don't have one of those levelin' bar, and the exhaust manifolds are no longer on.

I've used a chain bolted into opposite sides, and ends of the exhaust ports. If you have the transmission attached you sill need to adjust the chain location a little to the rear. The exhaust bolt holes give you enough to get it at the angle you need to come out. Set up the chains and try lifting the engine a little. You will be able to see if you need to move the chain locations. I use the regular exhaust bolts for this. Run them in most of the way and use a regular chain not something you would use for a dog run! Hope this helps. Chuck in NH

I was thinking of buying some eye hooks that will fit in the exhaust manifold holes, the 4 outside ones (Front left/right, Back leftright) and lifting it from there....tranny not attached btw, so you think this would be okay?

I would go with bolting to the exhaust bolt holes. Eye hooks can slip out or even worse break out of holes. Use the chains! Chuck in NH

If you still had the inlet manifold on the motor ,you can buy a plate for around $10 from Speedway Motors .Remove the carb and bolt on the lifting plate .It has 3 or 4 holes in the plate so you can balance it if the tranny is still attached to the motor  . If you can weld ,you could make one for nothing . All you need is a scrap piece of 1/4 inch plate.

You don't need a leveling bar but it does make the job much easier.  The carb plate is nice, too.

I have always used hooks that came out of swinging meat trailers that I hooked around the exhaust. Much to my surprise, I recently noticed on page 11 of the 56 Ford shop manual they use a rig almost identical to what I made from meat hooks. I don't remember where I got the idea. Maybe I saw one at a Ford dealership.
