On a 312 YBlock is it best to use an exhaust manifold gasket or no gasket between the manifold and the head?  Any advantage in not using a gasket? I have been using a gasket but get a small exhaust leak that I would like to stop. Thanks!

An exhaust manifold gasket helps compensate for uneven or warped manifold flanges, and decreases manifold failure due to cracks.  The ex. manifold I recently had machined was warped and out of true to such an extent the machinist had to work extra to establish a level base point.
