Well just got a bit smarter this afternoon. I drove my car to work this morning. No problem. On the way home the engine died while going about 60 mph. I knew I was low on fuel so I managed to coast into the only gas station for about 25 miles. It wasn't lack of gas that was the problem. My rotor had managed to grab my electronic ignition wires inside the distributor and twist them into a rats nest and ripped them off of the firing "sensor". Well, I kept my old points in the trunk but my tools were all back at the house. An old steak knife (gas station had no tools) and some black tape and a piece of cardboard (no one has match covers anymore) and away we go.
I knew the wires were loose but never thought they'd get wrapped up by the rotor. I guess I'll have to put tape at the grommet so the wires won't be able to get longer back inside the distributor.
Gotta put my tools back in the car. Have to buy new Petronix tomorrow. $90 dollar lesson.
