I've got a set of 292 and 279 intake gaskets but don't know how to tell them apart. What can I look for?

On the 292 gaskets the dividers between the ports are horizontal. On the 279 they are vertical. You did mean 279, not 272 didn't you? 272 and 292 gaskets are the same.

I guess it does sound like a dumb question. Sorry bout that. What it is. I got a rebuild set of gaskets for my 312 when I rebuilt the motor. It was a set that fit all of the y-blocks made or at least thats what was listed. It contained both types of rear main seals and such. It had three sets of intake gaskets. I used the set that matched my intake and heads the best. The others were slightly smaller and varied slightly amongst themselves. So now I have the left overs layin around and I'm trying to get them identified. I always thought they used the same gaskets but two of the four left seem to be a little shorter going into the water jacket in the front. These all have the horizontal dividers between the ports .

Sounds like you have a Fel-Pro gasket set which includes intake gasket sets for all Y’s from 239/256’s thru the large port 292/312’s. Some of the early 272’s had an intake gasket port size that fell between the small 239 and the larger ’57 and up sizes. Keep in mind that each pair of intake gaskets have a left and right side specific gasket so when you see a gasket that appears too short at the front for one side it is likely for the other side instead.
