The best ones are made by Spectra Premium Industries, Boucherville PQ. This is the one most of the parts suppliers sell. It is very heavy galvanized and identical to the original down to the creases. Only difference is it has a nylon pick-up screen instead of a brass one like the original tanks had. If you click on the contact us you will find your state's dealer. You will need the F31D model for a 56

I bought one from eBay. It's a VERY good tank. Plan on spending ~$200. eBay sells two, one from Rock Auto and the other from the east coast (Mass). I would buy this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1956-56-Ford-Fairlane-Customline-gas-fuel-tank-F31D_W0QQitemZ120412895416QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories?hash=item120412895416&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245&_trkparms=65%3A1%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318Turns out, they are about the same money, but this is a couple bucks cheaper. I think all these tanks are really made in Canada. Mine was too. Good tank though. Dave

I have bought several tanks from the guy on eBay. They are made in Canada and are of very good quality in my opinion. I bought a couple for 56 Fords and several for GMC pickups. I will buy some more from him. 50 years of lead and rust accumulation is hard to get rid of in old tanks.

American Designers is the fuel tank line name for Spectra Premium Industries.

I bought mine from tee-bird products about 10 years ago - dont know what brand, but i trust t-bird, and its been great. I coated the inside and sprayed the outside with eastwoods "tank tone" paint, and it still looks brand new.

Thanks for the replies, I bought one from the guy on Ebay. I haven't got it yet, but since I still need to get rid of probably 12 gallons of old gas, I really don't need it yet. I have to figure out how to get rid of the gas. When I grew up in Northern Texas on the farm we would just find a weedy patch and pour it on it or maybe give an ant bed a little shot and then light it. Oh well, things have really changed and I don't think that my manicured community would allow that.

I still live in Texas and stale gas works good on mesquite trees. I take gas from people at our truck shop and put it in with used motor oil. The only thing the collection people worry about is anti freeze in the oil. Gas doesn't bother them. Next time you change your oil, mix it with the gas. A collection site will probably take it as long as it is black. Down here used motor oil goes into bunker oil. I think a little gas in the fuel probably makes the ships run better.

Disposing of 12 Gallons of Gas properly is a problem..however for small amounts, by itself or mixed with old solvent, I put it in a squeeze bottle of some kind, & use it to apply one or two shots carefully & directly into the middle of Dandelion weeds in my lawn & boulevard. It soaks in & they are toast in the next day or two..
