I was offered a MSD box from a scrub circle track car that my buddy liquidated. Do I need the new pro billet MSD dist to run a true multiple spark discharge?
Has anyone run one on a street or other Y block?
Any good bad or ugly feedback welcome.

I am running an MSD box which I trigger with a Pertronix points replacer in a stock distributor. you can trigger the MSD with anything including points. The Spark energy is much higher with the MSD and the wires rotor and cap must be in tip top shape. Try to get the MSD instructions from the donor, if not available look on line for them. They will explain how to hook it all up including the tach. You will like the MSD especially at the price you are paying!!

Get a Blaster 2 coil to go with the MSD box. You will be fine.

55Birdman (7/8/2009) Get a Blaster 2 coil to go with the MSD box. You will be fine. And GOOD wires, with the coil Birdman told you to get, you'll be able to open your plug gap to at least .045".

Count me in too, I'm running an MSD box, stock dizzy with pertronix ignition and coil. Jerry Christenson recommended it all to me and I didn't think twice. The hot setup includes a "Ford Racing" duraspark cap and rotor conversion kit with their 9mm wires. The cap, rotor and wires are available from both JEGS and Summit for about $100. It could be quite painful if you were bitten by a discharge. I have avoided that, but I once tried to start the engine with the coil wire off. It was like the 4th of July in there when the spark leaped from the open coil to the valve cover. I set my plugs at .050 and it all works great for me. Better starts, more complete combustion, much more reliable spark delivery at all speeds should be expected. Be sure to read the instructions, a compatible coil is recommended.

Bill, If you use the 6AL you can purchase "chips" which insert into the unit for your Rev limiter. I beleive the only difference between the two units is the mounting sysytem and the RPM limit feature. Either one will work well on the street.

Thanks for all the info fellas. I will verify, but believe it is the 6AL. Will be a nice upgrade from the sound of everyone's experience. I just need to finish the rear main & chain upgrades first..... I hate doing too many changes at once! Can be a nightmare working out the bugs when you have several places to look!

AussieBill, I run an MSD-6AL. The "6" is for the next higher output from "street", the "A" is for the 20 degrees of multiple discharge, and the "L" is for a rev limiter. They may have other chips, but they advertise 3000, 6000, 7000, and 8000 rpm limiting plug in modules (we use the 7000).

I'm sure a 5500 would be more than enough for my little e-4 isky! Hell, 5200 would probably be fine!
