What is this about - never seen one of these. Looks like some heavy mods, but the part number is cast underneath?

There were companies 50 years ago that built speed equipment that have slipped into obscurity. It wouldn't surprise me if this isn't the product of one of these companies. It doesn't resemble anything I have ever seen unless it was the police interceptor option in 57 before the FE engine came out.

Here is the pic off of E bay.  One of the other pics showed the bottom with a casting mark with the letter S in a diamond along with the Ford part no.  It looks a little like an Edelbrock because the diagonal passages top left to bottom right are covered.  The Fords were open to the bottom of the carb.

Here's my 2 cents.  It's a '56 manifold, the carb bosses are square instead of scalloped, and the holes are bored, not cast with the dogbone shaped openings corner to corner.  '57 manifolds had the dogbone openings.  I would say the heat passage rotted out from years of exhaust and condensation, so was cut out and a plate welded in the bottom of the manifold.  Then the plates were welded front to rear to block the exhaust at the head.  The EDB "casting" number is hard to see, appears to be stamped instead of raised letters typical of Ford casting numbers.  The repairs, if that's what they are, appear to be well done.  '56 manifolds are much more rare than '57s.

I agree that it was designed for the tea pot carbs which would lead one to think it was 56. Other than that, I just haven't ever seen one quite like it.

His name is John Wilson from Tallassee AL, a long time y blocker. He went on his honeymoon in a new 57 Ford. He bought up a bunch of stuff from Smoky's garage sell and this could very well have come from there. He has a lot of rare stuff and everynow and then he will sell some of it off. I don't know if he has anymore of the T bird dampers, but they were hubs that he machined with a Mopar damper, nice looking piece. John is getting on up in years but you would not know it if you see him in person. He is a real gentleman and full of Y block stories. For those that get Y block mag, he had a article about his bird engine issue before last.

You may be on to something here.  One of Smokey's experimental nascar cheater (did I use that word?) manifolds from '56.  He may have even cut the bottom out of the manifold to access the runners for some "experimenting", then welded a plate on the bottom and made it a cold manifold with a Ford casting number.  The larger bores for Lincoln teapots makes sense now.  A guy who would build a 7/8 scale chevelle for Daytona could certainly change a manifold a little.
