This has nothing to do with Y blocks, except some of you guys might be "BLOCK HEADS" when it comes to this.

My dad passed away 6 years ago with prostate cancer, about 6 weeks ago I started having some pain and after a visit to the Doc he found I had a prostate infection. I'm doing better, just finished up my meds, but I'm only 40 years old.

Bob, Harry and Dennis seen me at Fords at Summit and I was hurting!

I know when something isnt broke it doesnt need fixing. Do your family and yourself a favor and GET CHECKED!

Glad you're better Kevin. That's tough having to walk a quarter mile every 30 minutes to go to the bathroom.

I had severe infection in 1967 while in service. Took months to get well. Left enlarged prostate and what I have been told a very hard prostate. I get checked every 6 mo at the VA. I was 22 in  '67. My walk to the bathroom was about 10 miles uphill both ways. As he says GET CHECKED!!! Serious business.

My Dad died from prostate cander 26 years ago so I started getting checked every 6 months after that.In 1990 one of my checkups found early cancer. It was successfully treated and I've been fine since then.GET CHECKED!!!!!!

There's an interesting side-effect to one of the prostate drugs that I take today. In about 30 percent of men who take it,a side-effect is increased hair growth. That's a good thing for someone as clumsy as I am who bumps his head a lot.

Back in the 60's doctors told me I had an enlarged prostrate and I thought nothing of it. Back in 2001 I was on the way to Germany when I got chills and fever on the plane. I think I shook the whole plane with my chills and at first I peed brown as coffee and then quit peeing. By the time I got to Germany I thought I was going to die. My wife's relatives took me to a doctor and he told me the infection had gotten into my kidneys and my kidneys had shut down and my body had become septic. He gave me Cipro and it worked. When I got back to the states, I had one of those Roto Rooter jobs done. That was a week before 911 and I have annual checkups. Doctors have told me that there is always a chance when kidneys shut down, they never start working again. Life would not be fun taking dialysis 3 times a week. I can't stress the importance enough to have your prostrate checked.

About two months ago, I spent all night in the emergency room, severe chills and fever. Same deal accute infection, a month on antibotics and I'm alright, but you can bet the next time I feel a twinge I'm heading to the doctor. By the way Flomax is great stuff, only have to get up maybe one time at night. I'm 62 and have been having annual checkups for years without a prostrate problem, but this one through me for a loop.

Kevin,

Glad you got checked out! They caught mine at 54 years old. They think that earlier testing will show more problems with younger guys. Had mine removed and ain't missed it yet. Early detection without a corresponding action is a waste. This stuff kills but usually when its gone undetected for a long time. If your over 50 guys I'd have it checked! While we are on med things, another very worthwhile exam is a colonoscopy (sp?). Colon cancer is not fun

Gordon and I have both been scared by high PSA's. They did a biopsy on me (that hurts!) and I sweated bullets for a week waiting on  the result. Turned out to be an infection.

There are new guidlines for testing that have come out in the last couple years.  Up through 2007 I had annual DRE's and PSA tests.  Then my new doc said that there are new guidelines that suggest PSA tests can lead to unnecessary biopsys and lead to surgery or other treatments such as radiation which have their own risks that may not be justified.   Here is a pretty current article that discusses it.

http://health.msn.com/health-topics/prostate-cancer/articlepage.aspx?cp-documentid=100237446

Other articles that I have read say that the variation in PSA levels between healthy individuals make it difficult to set a threshold level for PSA to use as a guideline.

I think one thing is statistically true, If you ride a motorcycle without a helmet you are taking a much bigger risk of dying soon.

This thread is pretty far off Y blocks but all kinds of stuff fits under this heading, any other opinions?
