What is the best idle rpm for a 292?

it's a blue '58 f100 but not sure what color has to do with it.  It does have a two barrel holley and I had it set at around 600-700 rpm and it would stumble and even die at times but at 800-900 it sounds like it is way too high.

IIRC, a 292 with 4 bbl and FOM should idle at 450, per the 1956 car service manual.

Mine has a bigger cam with more overlap, and i can get it to idle around 500 to 550.

Both of those are with the car in gear.

Not sure if its different for later years/trucks.  No mention of color dependencies in the manual either!

My truck is red and white two tone so that makes my idle about 800-900.  The cam may be the reason also.  Tongue

Two tone does kick it up a bit. Mine seems to like about 750, also a non stock cam.

Thunderboy:

Try shutting your engine off while it is still in gear.  That should stop the run-on.
