Pardon my ignorance, but what is the proper method for separating factory swaged drum-lug-hub combos? Also, can new bearing races be successfully driven in, or is a press really needed? Best method for removing old race?

Thank in advance.

Don't know about the proper method, but heating the drum around the hub flange is what I have used in the past. Yes you can drive in bearing races, special drivers are made to do the job, but a brass drift will work also. Drive the old races out with a BFH and punch. Word of caution, always use safety glasses!

One other thing. When you replace a front hub or drum, you need to turn the finished assembly on a brake lathe to keep things in alignment.

lowrider,

I assume that would only apply if drum was re-swaged to the hub before it's turned so the index never changes? Likely won't bother since I'm currently juggling/mix-matching several worn drums & hubs to get by until linings are shot and I'm ready for discs. Hopefully, the truest hub will fit the thickest drum concentrically (if I can get the damn thing un-swaged...!!#$*!%*).

Glen,

Soaked the assembly with PB Blaster a couple times, cooked the drum with a torch for about 5 min., and wailed on it with a BFH. It's like it was welded on back in '55! Guess I will bite bullet and seek professional help (or just live with the bent hub/bent wheel indexing until disc time).
