I am having trouble with the throttle linkage on my 1957 wagon with 312 and Carter four barrel. It doesn't want to return to the idle stop. Somebody has added an additional spring going forward which solves the idle problem but due to the increased pressure it causes the override portion of the linkage to operate which reduces the linkage travel. It overrode this feature with a bolt and nut but it doesn't fix the underlying problem. Also with the additional spring the pressure to operate the gas peddle is higher than necessary. I've attempted to follow the shop manual procedures for adjusting peddle height etc. but the problem with not returning to idle still exists.

I'm stumped at this point.

Thanks

Try disconnecting the carby linkage and seeing if it returns freely to closed position.

If this is fine, the problem is in the carby.

I had a Holley once with this problem and it turned out to be the secondaries not closing off fully, due to sticky linkage/throttle shaft.

I chased this problem for a while myself until I disconnected the carb and checked that it came back fully to the idle position.

The factory linkage can foul on the ferrule which supports the throttle arm where it bolts onto the back of the engine block - just needs to be cleaned and lubricated.

I hope this helps.

Jeff:

Make sure the fast idle cam is not sticking in the "fast" position or that the adjusting screw is not screwed in too far.
