The latest Rotella T (as sold by Shell Canada) is rated as CI-4 Plus, however in the "Recommended for" description, it is stated as API CJ-4 "ready." Can anyone clarify that description with respect to anti scuff additives? Thanks.

The CI-4 was the good stuff, the new stuff is the CJ-4 and I have read both ways that it is still good and that it is not. However the big diesels are getting cats so if the good stuff ruins the cats you know they must have taken it out of the oil.

A couple weeks ago I was in the local farm supply store and found 5 gallons of Rotella 30w (that's what I use in the race car) rated CI. I bought all 5, figuring that was the last of an old shipment. Today I was in there again, and they had about 15 gallons of the stuff. Maybe the straight 30 hasn't been reformulated like the multi-vis stuff has? John

Or the 30W does not move as fast and they had some in the warehouse. Anyway zinc is on the way out. Bought 4 gallons of old stock a few weeks ago. Was in Tractor Supply last week. They have a store brand w/ CI-4. TC

Hooiser, Is that straight 30 a non detergent? I haven't come across any straight weight Rotella in my neck of the woods, but I always ran straight weight years ago (mostly Pennzoil racing oil) and put over 300,000 miles on a 440 mopar and it could still leave a scrub in the dust with 5 big construction workers in the car and still did not smoke when I sold it.

Bill: It's detergent. Rated CF, CF-2, SI. I used to run Pennzoil 30, and back in the heydays of additives, I always said "if Pennzoil thought I needed that stuff in my oil they'd put it in there". I guess that doesn't hold true anymore. If the government regulations require manufacturers to take certain chemicals out of their products, out it comes. John

All this oil talk has got me confused. I was at a car chow this weekend and talked to a Lucas Oil rep who had a booth there. i inquired about the rmoval of zinc from oils and how it would affect a solid lifter engine. He said I would be fine if I continue to use my current oil of prefrence (Castrol 20/50w), as long as I used a product like their Lucas Oil additive. He said my other option was to use there racing oil or one of the competitors such as Royal Purple. Is this guy full of it, or should I follow his advice? Rob

He's a salesman right? I talked to the local distributor and he had no Idea what I was talking about BUT their products would fix it! If nothing else works just throw money at it! Chuck
