i have the issue saved for just that reason BigGrin.. BTW the previous issue had a pic of out own Charlie Burns' "Yellow Brick" on page 80.. i really like this mag just because of the wide-range of people it appeals to.. seems like most mags catuer to one group or another but this one tries to cover different bases of the same hobby.. i dig it..

Sorry but I am not a fan of there product.  I had two go bad with in a month, and that is with one never working.  I put a MSD dizzy in (a lot more money but worth it) and have never looked back.  I understand people run theres for ever with no problem but I must be the most unlucky guy ever or that product was cr@p.

I thought that the reason for the petronix or other similar points type electronic ignition conversion kits burning up was leaving constant power to the unit while the distributor was stationary?

Like listening to the radio with power running to the Dist. Isn't this what the Accessory feature originated from anyway? I used to burn up allot of points leaving the key in the "on" possession while jamming out when I was tuning my stereo in high school.. Dad used to get all fired up & say "you are gonna burn up them points. Turn the key to accessory or start for damn sakes!"

Ok, so I lied, he's Italian, he just used the f-bomb like fifteen times in the above sentence & probably threatened me at the same time!

I have stopped counting the the number of pointless ignition coversions.  There have been Pertronix and Accel.  For the money spent there could easily be one of the new high dollar distributors under the hood now. The Accel was the worst to install.  Figure it is my problem and someday I'll outgrow the destructive tendencies.  Things that kill:  leaving ignition on, shorting ignition unit via improper wiring, voltage spikes, runing a coil of inadequate internal resistance without resitor, in other words have the electric system in good shape with good grounds, and dont mistakenly direct short a hot wire with ignition on.  Am using another Pertronix now.  It gives a sensation of increase in power that the Accel did not.

I thought the same thing about leaving the ignition in the ON position or miss wiring or any other thing mentioned but with the help of Pertronix tech help we could not find any of those problems.  I was crazy about making sure I never left it in the ON position and still have problems with two of them in one month and kept all of the same set up with the new MSD dizzy and have not had a single problem, even the wiring was setup the same.  I am glad it works for so many others but I will never recommend it to others, good luck if you use it and hope you dont get stuck some place.

Sorry to hear of all the guys that have trouble with the Petronix I've been running them for years, four cars fourteen years the oldest, and never had one quit.  I guess I'm just the lucky one.  Smile Then again I don't leave the ign. on, Dad taught me that too thought he was Scottish and didn't cuss so much.

If you ever do a compression test, be sure to disconnect the coil bypass wire. I believe that is how I fried mine. The bypass wire energizes when the remote starter switch engages the starter. I don't know if it was the voltage spike or the bypass wire making it as if the key was left on or what. When the compression test was done, the truck wouldn't start and it had no spark. Fortunately, it was in the driveway and I swapped points back in. They work but they're too easy to mess up, in my opinion. I couldn't really tell if it made any difference. When I put the points back in the motor actually felt a little stronger. So I didn't rush out to buy another.

I've had excellent results with Petronix, on several vehicels and tractors. The worst I've had was with anything that said Mallory on it.

The love em or hate em theme seems to come up nearly every time the electronic ignition conversion subject comes up. My question is, do Pertronix kits come with complete instructions as to what works & what doesn't?
