If you loosen the nut on top of the steering box and turn the screw IN, you can get rid of your many play. Don't forget to tighten the nut back down when you're done. /Duck

Is the steering box any good if it steers hard to the right but easy to the left. I put an alignment on the car, but it takes an effort to turn to the right.

When you say it turns hard one way, do you mean there is a definite hard spot in the steering? Did you by chance adjust the box before the problem showed up? The wheels should be straight ahead when adjusting. On the adjuster, is there thread showing above the lock nut? If the screw is deep in the nut there is likely no adjustment left. Also, a hard spot will likely indicate that the worm or a bearing or other part is badly worn.
