Does anyone know the exact dimensions of the rocker shaft (diameter, min/max rocker-to-shaft clearance)? I've been looking for those for a while and haven't found anywhere yet. Prove me wrong, but it seems like the shaft diameter is somewhere near or even match that of the FE shaft.

Not quite, i'm at the first steps of upgrading the old soviet GAZ v8 engine, and it's rocker arm geometry is very close to the FE's (except for the slightly thicker metric shaft), and the rockers (FE and soviet) are virtually identical except for the ratio - 1.75 vs. 1.5. And one of my goals is to get 1.5 - 1.55 roller rockers without the need to elongate the pushrod holes.

And since this GAZ engine was developed in the mid 50's with Ford assistance, no wonder there are similarities.

The FE shaft dia is app .836" and the Y block shaft dia is .780", i would assume .002"-004" clearance would be suitable, but john mummert would have much more precise measurements, regards bill.

Sure, here it is.

The first engine was developed for the '58 Chaika - (soviet Packard clone). this one is the biggest in the family - 336ci, 8.5 compression ratio, 195hp,

hydraulic lifters, gear-dirven cam, rocker oiling through the rocker shaft. Later they were used by kgb in their Volga cars, like this one:

At the same time another version has been engineered, cheaper and smaller. It was downgraded to 256ci, hydraulic lifters were abandoned. This engine

primarily was used in a four ton trucks. Ultra-low 7.6 ratio, 125hp (with rev limiter); another version was 287ci, military truck and light bus version,

130hp.

336 and 256/287 utilize different blocks, heads, cranks etc, but some parts (including valvertrain) are interchangeable.

All of them are entirely aluminium pressure-cast, with wet liners, but quite sturdy (i'd prefer cast-iron though ).

WOW!, glad i asked! looks like those pesky KGB infiltrated , the y block, lincoln archives during the cold war and developed a possible nascar threat! sure is an interesting engine and similar to olds/studebaker also, i think they may have copied the firing order by the sound of it? fred what is the firing order? and thanks for the info.
