OK, agent fred, i.ll ask! what is this GAZ engine you mention, what would it have been in or is in? how about some details? thanks, bill.Sure, here it is.
The first engine was developed for the '58 Chaika - (soviet Packard clone). this one is the biggest in the family - 336ci, 8.5 compression ratio, 195hp,
hydraulic lifters, gear-dirven cam, rocker oiling through the rocker shaft. Later they were used by kgb in their Volga cars, like this one:

At the same time another version has been engineered, cheaper and smaller. It was downgraded to 256ci, hydraulic lifters were abandoned. This engine
primarily was used in a four ton trucks. Ultra-low 7.6 ratio, 125hp (with rev limiter); another version was 287ci, military truck and light bus version,
130hp.
336 and 256/287 utilize different blocks, heads, cranks etc, but some parts (including valvertrain) are interchangeable.
All of them are entirely aluminium pressure-cast, with wet liners, but quite sturdy (i'd prefer cast-iron though
).
