ok so i searched this site and i couldn't come up with what i was looking for. I was looking for some realistic horsepower and torque numbers for a built 292. Its a 59 f100 292 that i will hopefully but a 312 crank in and bore it twenty to forty over. this has the pickup heads that i have heard flow decent just have big combustion chambers. so if i get a set of domed pistons to up my compression it would be ok. so what is a reasonable estimate of hp and more importantly torque. this will be in a 59 f100 4x4 with a 5 speed nv4500 trans. I rarely rap my motors over 3000rpms so top end screaming power isnt that important i want the low end power off the bottom. so what would it take to get say 250hp and 300 ftlb of torque out of this motor.

It won't take much to get 300ft/lbs. The increase in compression alone might do it. The 292 that could have come in my truck was 270ft/lbs @ 2000rpm. With a cam a step or two up from stock, dual exhaust and a 4v intake, it should do well.

For what you'll be doing, hp will not be so important. I'll let someone else speculate on that one.

so what kind of torque numbers do you think would be possible. I was thinking a 312 crank and bored slightly,to bump me up to say a 309. then i was thinking of domed pistons and Mummert's new connecting rods. Then a cam upgrade and some head improvements.and either a 4brl aluminum intake or a triple duece set up. What kind of cam grind would be good for produceing goog useable torque and power on the street with a 5 speed manual and 4wd

There isn't much need to go to a 4 barrel or triple 2s if you are going to be operating below 3000 rpm most of the time.

My 292 has the oversized exhaust valves, a brand new edelbrock quad sitting on top of some strange and shiny high flow intake. The engine has been bored to be 323 inches, has a special cam, and has full headers. It supposedly makes 362 hp and 346 ft. lbs torque.

If you already have the 312 crank, go ahead, but if you gotta buy it and pay to have it ground, save your money.  You can get a LOT of money tied up in one of these engines quickly.  Parts are expensive.  Unless you're going to "zing" it you don't need the rods.  Better to spend the money on his cam/llifters.  The Mummert 4V intake would be a nice touch but the more float bowls you have on a 4x4, the more problems you have.  Get your block bored and "zero" decked so you can use cheaper pistons, get your stock rods redone, get a quality valve job done on the heads and put the money you save on Mummerts cam kit and intake.  Then put your extra money in a TBI unit like the Holley unit.  It will give you the HP and torque you want as well as give it 4x4 manners you won't believe.  I converted my latest 4x4 to efi and the difference is night and day.  JMO.  Smile

Also, John was right: Don't think a two barrel Y will be weak, they really only need a little more than 300 cfm to keep them happy. 500 cfm is more than you could ever use. A quad is a bit overkill, and a 3X2 is totally awesome, but not so much driven by practicality.

I was thinking more along the lines of a 390cfm 4v for the torque. Nothing big.
