Uncorked the intake manifold the other day on a basically fresh motor, and the head on the passenger side had a threaded bung/bushing (just like the one on the drivers side, at the rear of the head, for the temp sender) at the FRONT  coolant port. How can this be removed? does the head need to come off and take it to a machine shop? Can I put this in the rear port of the passenger head and essentially run two temp senders (one factory, and one for a Sunpro gauge? Dan

Dan, I use a slide hammer to remove the temperature bung bushings as they are simply a press fit. Because of distributor clearance, there is typically not enough room for a temperature sending unit under the distributor and especially if considering a mechanical gauge. My preferences are to actually take the temperature reading right behind the thermostat as obtaining the reading at the back of the engine tends to give a slightly cooler reading than actual.

The threads are pipe thread, so a plug could be used. CASCO, the Tbird parts supplier, has a tool for removal. There are two sizes for these bungs, so you will have to tell them what size it is. You do not need to take the head off. I had to replace one myself, and with the tool from CASCO it came right out. I had to replace it with one that had the correct size hole

thanks fellas - problem solved. I will check the clearance issue and make sure I won't have any problems - everything is coming together pretty good.
