OK, I know it's not the "preferred" intake for the best results, but I got it for less than the price of half a tank of gas and its in good shape, so I'm looking for my best option for a 4 bbl carb for it... with the following as my car's profile:

-57 Fairlane

-272, rebuilt bone stock, presently w/2bbl carb, has '55 heads for some reason...

-mostly weekend and after hours cruiser, not daily driver, no racing, no "need for speed", 3 on the tree-non overdrive trans...

-goals... some improvement in performance, gas mileage not a concern, easy installation, dial-in and maintenance of the car.

Or, should I just stick with the 2 bbl??

well, it bolts on the intake w/4 bolts, if that's what you mean...

was on the engine when I got the car in 91 or so; since rebuilt...

If it is by chance an ECZ-9425-A... then its the four barrel "T-pot" manifold like the original off my '56.

There are adapters that will fit the later edition Holley 4150 body carbs on there - look around a bit an maybe you can get a deal. In a sedan there shouldn't be a problem with overall height?

The Holley 450 CFM carbs (4150/4160 body) show up on ebay for decent prices and they are just about identical to the 390 CFM carb that is the newer more current edition. Look for the one that has a choke - the 450 used on the dual four barrel tunnel ram set-ups is not the one you want.

A Holley 4160 will be an easy swap, and the 390 cfm is fine for cruising/regular driving. Should be able to get one still in the box for about $300 or so. That's what I had on my 312 before I went with the Demon...which I like even better because it's more tuneable. It's set up pretty much like a Holley though. I think Ted has a Road Demon on his 272, along with others on this board. These carbs are in pretty much the same ballpark price-wise as the Holleys.
