Had hoped to pull eng and trans (Ford-o-matic) out together but book says to separate and pull engine out alone...clearance problems. Is this the only way and same for going back in?

The only way I pull a Y-block engine and trans together is if its all junk because something is going to break. Its just too tight a squeeze to get it out as one piece.

have to agree with Kenneth. Especially with the autos, I pull only the engine, leaving the trans for later. If you have extra time and you are not in a particular hurry, you could pull the front clip off and maybe pull both the engine trans and together. But even with all that, you still need a steep angle of approach/dismount to clear that firewall...

OK, that is what I needed to know...going to come out as engine only, too bad. Thanks, Ron

I always pull them together.Remove the grille and the panel that holds the hood latch and use a screw-type leveler attached lengthwise to the engine. As you pull it out or drop it in just use the leveler to keep everything clear of the firewall. It is also easier if you remove the cross-member under the transmission. Also, to prevent a big mess, plug the output shaft opening on the transmission. This is easier for me than wrestling the transmission out from under the car later.
