Just got back from a salvage yard, found a 57 ford wagon, when I opened the hood the valve covers said mercury, was this a common practice, any idea what motor it is? Thanx, Gary

Gary: Someone has changed the valve covers or the engine. If it is a Merc engine, later than '55, it is a 312.

John, I saw a post on this recently but age or something is keeping me from remembering it, where are the #s stamped on the block to see if it's a 312 and what should it say? Gary

Gary; Here is a link to the Y-Block castings, both Heads and Blocks. However, You may have to look at the crank flange to make sure. http://www.ford-y-block.com/techincal.htm By the way, I am also looking for a '57 Ranch Wagon or Ranchero project so if you find one and you are not going for it, please let me know. Rono.
