I think I will have to do the 1/4 turn trick as they are worn and I can imagine a feeler gauge doing a good job.  Maybe Aussie Bill can explain that sequence I saw a while back.. Do I do the adjustment cold ? and what am I feeling for , as the pushrod starts to bind while screwing down then back off 1/4 turn while at TDC?  I only want to do it once and get it right..

With the engine warm but not so hot you can't touch it go through the firing order (15486372) With both valve covers off watch #6 and when it comes up on overlap (exhaust almost closed all the way and the intake just opening, rockers even) adjust both intake and exhaust on the #1 cylinder.  Turn the adjuster down till you can't rotate the push rod between your fingers, make sure you check it with the wrench off the adjuster so you don't compress the spring any and get a wrong feel, then back off 1/4 turn.  Now turn the engine 90* clockwise till #3 is on overlap and repeat the process on the #5 cylinder.  #6 on overlap adjust #1, #3 on overlap adjust #5, #7 on overlap adjust #4, #2 on overlap adjust #8, #1 on overlap adjust #6, #5 on overlap adjust #3, #4 on overlap adjust #7, #8 on overlap adjust #2. 

Again, this is not the only way or the best way to adjust valves but it doesn't require a lot of tools or thinking AND IT WORKS VERY WELL.
