I have blue thunder intake for my 55 bird and i need to know which carb i should use. I have 390cfm 4 barrel holley that i put on stock intake some time ago. Will thhis carb be ok or do I need something else? I want it to have some power when i hit the pedal yet at $3.00 gal for gas i need it to not be so eager to use all ther is in the tank. This carb ran well and started well never had problems with it. i have heard of bigger carbs on this intake and i just need to know whats out there. thanks 55birdman

From what I've read it sounds like the 390CFM is a good way to go. I'm thinking of replacing my 650 double pumper with one! Chuck in NH

You might try an Edelbrock 500 (or a Holley 465) just to see if it is of any benefit. They Edelbrocks are on ebay, used, pretty cheap. The Holley seems more elusive. I think anything over a 650 is overkill for almost everybody on this site. I've had a 600 on two separate combinations and it seems to work well with both.

I vote for using the Holley 390 piece - it covers virtually every base but the rev ranges over 4500. Besides - you already own it. If you feel the need for speed, Charlie's right - you can get an Ebay change-out down the road.

I put a 600 cfm Holley 4160 on mine because it was cheap and I've been through the drill of sorting them out a few times on several vehicles. A 600 with a heavy secondary spring doesn't quite give the low rev throttle response of the 390 but still works pretty good.
