My estate sale bought '55 2 door V8 badged sedan has a 1959 Cleveland(CF) B9AE-F in it.There is no dot on the crank flange so I'm guessing its a 292.The intake ECB-9425-B,also CF,has the integral choke but also has the wide mount for later style 4 barrels. It had a tagged '66 Ford 4 barrel with electric choke on it,but in the trunk was an earlier but non-working clogged up version of that carb with no choke housing at all that after running the numbers seems to be off an Edsel.Since the older carb mated up perfectly to the choke on the manifold it would seem that the older carb was the original carb. Also to accomodate the gas pedal linkage someone enlarged the factory hole through the firewall by cutting upward about an inch.I'm at a loss as to why they did that if all Y-blocks were the same casting dimensions, and just what this engine was from.Needless to say the old guy that owned it passed on and nobody at the estate knew a thing about it.By the way,I put an Edelbrock 650 manual choke carb on it and it now runs much much better.I did have to put a spacer between the carb and manifold to clear that integral choke.Anybody here have any ideas? One other thing...the three on the tree shifter has been flipped over to the left side of the steering wheel. It is functional but backwards/upside down pattern. Was this a custom trick from back in the day?Thanks.........Phordric

your engine is a 292 as you guessed. all y blocks are more or less the same.you car was worked on by a butcher.he didnt have the correct gas linkage so cut the firewall.most customlines had a 2 bbl carb and the linkage was on the pass, side if it was a standard.you have to change it for a 4 bbl.

The integral choke that was in your way, was found on 55s but not on later intakes. 57 & up 4 Bbl intakes have the bolt pattern used by 57 & later Holley 4150-60s etc.

I forgot your other question re the shifter flipped to the left side. My guess is that the previous driver was in some way handicapped. Another thing to check is what year distributor is in the car. For the carb you are running you want a 57 or later distributor that has vacuum & centrifical advance. Up thru 1956 they were vacuum advance only. Early ones are easy to I.D.. They have 2 advance springs visible on top of the points & condensor mounting plate. Early units don't match up well with later carbs..

Thanks Paul. The odd thing about the intake manifold is the integral choke being there with the later bolt pattern for the later 4bbl. carbs. The '55 intakes with integral choke have the bolt pattern for the Teapot carb.As I mentioned there was a working '66 Ford 4bbl. with choke on it(looked really dumb with TWO chokes on it) when I got it along with a '59 Ford/Edsel 4bbl in the trunk which was an earlier version of the same type as the '66.Also my Edelbrock 650 bolted right up to the manifold and works well.(and the Edelbrock is a manual choke and you have to look close to see that the integral choke is not hooked up to it)The distributer is correct for '59,I had to pull it to replace the diaphram and had to order the correct part for '59. Thanks again, Phordric

From your description and the supplied part numbers, it sounds like there’s an adapter under the carb allowing the use of a later model carb on a 1955 4V (Teapot carb) intake. Pictures? Here’s a previous post talking about the ECB-B intake manifold. http://forums.y-blocksforever.com/Topic35808-4-1.aspx

About the shifter being flipped over to the left side of the steering column, way, way back in the old days, we used to do that and brag about being able to shift gears and never take our arms from around the girlfriend. Actually, we did it to be different and have something to brag about.
