Has anyone used Permatex right stuff ,just trying to find out if it is worth the extra cost above regular silicone sealant.  CarlWink

I use silicone sealent gasket maker with most of my gaskets with no problems and nothing self. I use nothing with the heads and intake manifold other than the gaskets themselves.

Carl,

I haven't used it yet, but Jerry Christianson was swearing by it at Columbus this year.

The black silicon in an aerosol can doesn't seem to dry as fast. I made the mistake of using it on an oil pan, and when I tightened the bolts next day (like I had always done before with tube Permatex) it was still wet and squished out into the crankcase. It HAD dried enough though, to create a terrible mess removing and cleaning up the pan. I'm now convinced I should have just used a cork gasket & grease only, as in retrospect, an oil pan is likely something that shouldn't be permanently installed, though it usually will leak without silicon. Getting that pan off and cleaned it up nearly ruined it, and I don't even want to think about what it would have been like on an installed engine, instead of on a stand with easy access!

It's the best all round gasket sealer I've ever used.  I have some issues with the packaging, but the "stuff" is great.

I only use the black silicone gasket maker in the tube and it works great. I also use it to glue the valve cover gaskets to the valve covers only, that way i can remove the valve covers many times from the heads without hurting the gaskets.

Not sure in which area you are using it but I have great success with good ol' Permatex no.3 non hardening sealant, its horrible gooey stuff but for things like, rocker cover gaskets or sump gaskets its great. I use Ricks trick of using contact cement to glue the gasket to the cover then I use the sealant and if an when you need to break the seal it comes away quite clean. Rocker covers I have wiped down the area and gasket with a solvent cleaner whacked another wipe of permatex on and seal do her up again.. no probs!

Thanks for all the input. What i intend to use it for is to seal up the rear main seal retainer after i put in a new seal in.I will put it on the joint between the engine block and the retainer and also on both ends of the side seals.I just want to make sure it sets up and doesnt stay soft in the joint.   Carl
