Hi all, I'm new to the site and enjoy the input I read, so wanted to get some advise. I wanted to see if anyone has ever installed a GM 400 turbo wilcap transmission adapter behind their y-block 312 or 292, and if so, what kind of problems did you have? If you encountered any problems, or have a better suggestion, with that set up please let me know.

I’m using a Powerglide behind the Y in the altered roadster and also behind a Ford FE in my ’64 Fairlane. Both use ‘home made’ adapters made from ½” thick aluminum at the back of the blocks. Flywheel and starter fitment is the key on these swaps but the adapters give the luxury of moving the starter to a completely different location if desired. For the FE, I use a small diameter 460 automatic trans flywheel but the Y required building a flywheel from scratch. With both adapters, I use a 3 bolt late model FE starter. Here are a couple of past threads covering the use of a FE bolt patterned bellhousing behind a Y. These may help in clarifying some of the issues that arise when attempting to adapt a different transmission to an engine. http://forums.y-blocksforever.com/Topic16647.aspx http://forums.y-blocksforever.com/Topic23380.aspx

An AOD Transmission is supposedly supposed to net a 35 to 45% increase in fuel mileage. If you drove 30,000 miles a year thats a big savings in gas and would pay the conversion within 1 year. Is the turbo 400 an overdrive? I know Nada about scrub stuff. and don't care to.

Ok everyone, thanks so far for the input. Let me tell you exactly what I am doing. This is for a demolition derby car. I have always ran early 70's GM cars with 350 Chevy engines and 400 turbo trans, but when 350 engines get hot they don't last long, so I wanted to try the 292 Y-Block. That's what dominated the derby's in the early 70's and the Y-Block runs forever hot, and the 400 turbo always worked well, plus could take the abuse. Wilcap Transmission Adapters said they could make me a Y-Block adapter for the 400 turbo trans, but I have concerns about the aluminum spacers that bolt the crank shaft, and the Chrysler mini starter. I also thought about the Fordomatic or Cruiseomatic, but when they get hot they puke trans fluid from the dipstick tube. I do run trans and engine coolers behind my seat that holds a lot of ice, but I don't know if that'll help the Ford trans? Also, I would love for you guys to tell me I am crazy about the Ford trans - just don't think they will take the abuse, but am open to suggestions. I have been told the Ford trans has problems with breaking cases when put into reverse, but heard there is a fix for it - something about pinning the cases. Using the Ford trans would save me some money, but like I said before, I don't think the Ford trans could take the abuse like the 400 turbo. I appreciate everyone's time and any input would be great! Thanks
