I swear I removed a piston from a Ford 3.0 or 3.8 V6 a few years ago and it measured 3.80" what the pin diameter and location were I don't think I measured, any one know if those would work? they must sell those oversized.

I have 283 pistons in my 312 in my car hauler, but I wouldn't do it again.  The tops of the pistons have to be cut to Ford compression height, the Ford rods honed to the 283 pin size, the small ends narrowed to fit between the piston bosses, the pins shortened, and the piston pin bores machined to accept the pin locks.  I did all this to save a block that was already .060 over.  When it was all said and done, it wasn't worth the effort.

Gary: I'm sure that many of the guys on this site, would just love having to admit that their 312 Ford had 283 Chivy, (cough, spit) pistons in it....

I don't know how common 312-.060 over pistons used to be, or if the following has any bearing on the current situation. But as I recall, Ford only made pistons up to 0.40 thou over size for 312s.

John, Gary, I will wait for the forged domed pistons, now that I know they are on the way.   I was worried, because the pistons are the only component missing, except a rear seal, and maybe head gaskets. Will a standard Felpro comp head gasket work on 3.860 bore?

Works on mine. Smile

If you're willing to go to .075 over a 312 size ( 3.875 ) then you can use 283 pistons which are not hard to come by. Just alittle work on pin size and you have a perfect fit.I'll bet John can get those easy enough and add alittle more power to the Y as well.

Mike, the forged piston supplier is quoting me 8-10 weeks for the forged pistons. They are out of forgings so they need to be ordered and then the pistons made.

I can likely get the Silvolites in .060" over. They are made south of the border and are pretty heavy but my supplier usually has them.

I might be able to get some flat top forged pistons made sooner if that works for you.

I just ordered my 292 pistons from speedway last week.  When i inquired about them was told they were made by EGGE.  And i believe part of the part # they use was same as egge part #.   So 312 pistons may be made by them too.

I noticed Speedway offered 312 pistons and sent a question asking about the country of origin.  Pistons were only something like $220.  They sent back a response that said the suppliers of their parts did not provide Countries of Origin, so the information wasnt available.  I guess my fall off the Turnip truck was rougher than I thought.  Has anyone tried the Speedway pistons?
