I came across a good used Y 292 that sounds like a good candidate for a rebuild. I fabricated a cradle to haul it and have a cherry picker to remove it. My question is, when removing a Y-block with manual transmission attached, is it ok to lift the motor and transmssion by backing two of the intake manifold bolts using them to remove the eng/trans? Its several hundred miles away and the seller assures me its ready to lift out of the truck. Leaving tommorow. Hoping to get some advise on the fastest hookup without having to remove a lot of parts.

Outlaw56; I don't know if I would trust 2 bolts to hold the motor and tranny. I have always used a load leveler on my cherry picker which uses 4 bolt locations and gives you the ability to balance the motor and get the angle you need to pull it out of the vehicle. You could also use a less expensive lifting plate that uses the carb studs (after taking off the carb) Just my two cents worth. Rono

I have used a chain from the intake to pull several engines, but I always use a longer grade 8 bolt with large flat washers to replace the stock ones. I have also used a heavy strap run through the exhaust mainfolds, never had a problem, but common sense should always be used.

Lifting the engine by the exhaust manifolds or at the exhaust manifold bolt holes in the heads is also another option. I have a pair of mounting brackets that hook to the outsides of the heads for lifting purposes which allows engines to be picked up without removing carbs and in some instances, the air cleaner. Works great on dual or multiple carb setups.

Thanks everyone, I have a good selection of grade 8 bolts and washers to take with me. Snow in Lookout Pass (MT/ID) so going to do this Sunday or Monday. Thanks again for the suggestions.

I've picked up a Y block by using two of the intake bolts, one in front and one in the rear, opposite side. It had a three speed attached.
