Having an intermitting problem, touch the horn it blows fine, seconds later I just get a clicking  sound like the battery would be dead , few minutes later it may work fine.

Bad relay or maybe bad ground?. I have had other issues such as signal llights not working properly and that was due to a bad ground, had a ground on my heater motor last week due to rotton insulation on the wires, that's fixed.

I put a ground strap on my body to the frame and it increased my output voltage from my positive ground 6 volt alternator from 6 volts to 7.63 volts so I'm making progress but would appreciate anyones input as to what areas I need to make sure are grounded properly.

Thanks

If you’ve got the clicking noise but no horn, then I’m going to say go to the horn itself as the source of the problem.  It sounds like you’ve already ruled out low voltage from the list of things to look at assuming you do not have a 12 volt horn.

I think you have 2 horns correct? If niether is working intermittently I dont think your problem is the horns.I would have a good look at the relay and make sure it has a good ground through the mounting bracket and the wire terminals for good clean connection to the relay..Also the contact inside the steering wheel itself should be checked.

These faults can often be real hard to find, especially intermittent ones such as you describe. I would think this sounds like Ted is right, as the clicking you hear is the relay clicking on and off. If you are using twin horns, the problem is probably not the horns as it would be unusual for both earths to fail together. In this situation I would be checking the connection on the relay to the horns. If you are using the original relays they are prone to rust and dirt under the screws.

With neither horn working, the radiator support itself may have an intermittent ground.

Next time it wont work, run a booster cable from one horn body to the positive(postive ground) terminal of the battery. If it fixs it you have a bad ground at the rad support.

Thanks for everybodys input, after reading all that was posted, I started the process of elimination and cleaned all the bolted and wire connections and it turned out to be the contact on my left side horn. After a little sand paper and contact cleaner the horns now work fine.

If I remember correctly the power for the right comes from the left connection at the horn.Good fix MG!
