Hi,

A while back, I had posted (Post# 53438) that I was having problems with 3 plastic speedometer gears being "chewed up" and failing. After pulling the tail housing and inspecting the drive gear (metal) on the output shaft of the fordomatic, my mechanic found the gear to be extremely rusted and probably the cause of the failures.

There is a NOS speedometer drive gear for the 1956 Ford Fairlane and Thunderbird on ebay (Item# 200619752981). The part number is 8M-17285 and it is correct for 55-56 Ford Fairlane and Thunderbird with standard or overdrive transmission.

I have a 1956 Ford Crown Vic with a 292 and Fordomatic. While this gear drive also fit the 1956 Fordomatic? If not, where would I might find a good speedometer drive gear that would fit?

Thanks in advance,

Danny

That gear is what it is listed as.Fits standard transmissions only. The part # you need is MC-17285-A.The only place I found on the net that may have one is Dennis Carpenter. The # appears on his list  of NOS parts but no quantity or price.Worth a phone call or email. The original # was 1P-17285-B.Maybe someone here has a good used one from one of their parts transmissions.

I think the one you need is a 19 tooth which goes with fordamatic and 3.22 rear end.Check with T Bird products they can tell you for sure.I have some good used ones if you find out for sure.  Carl Lynn

Carl! He needs the driving gear which is on the output shaft. It only has 8 teeth. You are thinking of the driven gear on the end of the cable.Tee-bird does not carry them.As I mentioned the only possibility I found was Carpenter unless someone has a good used one.
