Hello All,

I just got my '56 F-600 up running and driving well. I used the original 272 engine from my other '56 F-100 project truck. The engine was rebuilt about 10 years ago. Since I installed the engine there has been a significant loud ticking sound coming from the top of the engine that seems to be on the passenger side. Yesterday I took the time and adjusted the valve lash to .018. A few needed adjustment, but nothing radical. I ran the engine with the valve covers off and noticed very nice oil flow to the rocker arms on both sides, but the noise still persists. I am running a Holley 4 barrel carb with Sanderson headers. I was thinking this morning that the noise may be influenced by the headers and possibly a valve seat or piston slap.

Does anyone have any thoughts or ideas?

Thanks,

Mike

Did you check to make sure the push rods are not hitting anything and that they are in their seats? There is a bolt hole in the heads that extends into the push rod hole. Too long of a bolt can hit the push rods. It the one that holds the plug wire guide by the distributor and a unused hole on the other side. Chuck

Have you pinpointed the noise with a stethoscope? Ruled out a leaky header gasket?
