I am using 15w40 Shell Rotella.20w50 is also used by others. The regular 10w30 10w40 car oils are not suggested.Something rated for diesel motors is a better choice because of the flat tappets in the Y-block.Others will offer their opinions.

I also run rotella in all my old cars, so does my pops in all his, and so does the old man ED down the street who was going through cams left in right till he read a article about how newer oil didnt have the additives the old oil did and everyone was using rotella, and swears by it and never had a cam problem again.....thats how my pops and i got turned onto it.....you can buy it at walmart.

Just for a different perspective, I run Amsoil 10W-40 Synthetic Premium in my '56 Customline. This oil has a high zinc formula for performance and flat tappets and is also used in diesels. They also make it in a 20W-50 (if you happen to live in Texas or Oklahoma right now) Rono

Any API SM 10W-40 rated oil will have the necessary zinc/phosphate content for the older flat tappet camshafts and is a good choice of oil weight for both new and lightly worn engines. Just be wary of any oil with 30W or less on its labeling as these do have a reduced zinc phosphorus content. Here’s a recent thread that contains links to other discussions regarding oil choices for the Y. http://www.y-blocksforever.com/forums/Topic56685-3-1.aspx
