Need some advice.  I have a 4100 carburetor I'm rebuilding for my 57 312 I've built.  My problem is the choke tube that goes through the base of the intake manifold is rusted out.  Are these choke tubes available anywhere?  I've checked into installing an electric conversion kit choke but I read where they do not work good because the choke opens up in about a minute which is to fast.  Any suggestions other than installing a manual choke?

I've removed the burnt out tube you are talking about, and it took quite a bit of work.  Havent installed one, but think Mac's or Dennis Carpenter have them.

I would try the electric choke first.  If it is coming off too quick, adjust the cap in the Rich direction.

Any of these suppliers would have them.Macs or Tee-Bird.com for starters.They also sell an inexpensive tool to drive the old tubes out.There is a better fix.Ford started using a "heat stove" that went in the exhaust manifold.Drill a starter hole and it self taps into the manifold and a pipe runs up to the choke.I just bought an aftermarket one on Ebay for $5.00.Then you can plug the old tube in the manifold.Much simpler setup than the original  was.

It not that hard to get the old one out. Usually the only thing left is the ends. Using various size drill bits you can get the old pieces out. I changed the one in my 56 and wasn't that hard for an amateur like myself. Putting the new one in should be easy.



In my opinion, using the "heat stove" approach looks terrible.

Also on this subject, the "B" intake I have likely came off a truck. Where the vent "Button" would normally be for the choke heat tube, there was a 1/4" hole, which had a bolt in it when I got it. There is no heat tube & there is no upper exit fitting for the choke heater pipe. What kind of setup was this? Anyone know? Thanks

I found it necessary to replace the choke tube on my '57 312 as it was rusted out. As was suggested I used increasing size drill bits at each end until I could pick out the remaining piece. The replacement tube, hat and the 90 degree fitting are available from Concours parts. FYI the tube has two different diameters at each end to facilitate installation so be aware when drilling out the manifold and then of course the tube can only go in one way. My choke housing was pretty clogged up with carbon due to the rusted out tube. Everything works like new after the repairs. Hope this helps.

Re the "B" truck intake again. Probably I didn't make it clear when I said there is no exit fitting for the choke feed tube. I should have said there is no exit hole or fitting at all. The casting in blank there. Presumably trucks had some type of choke setup, but how did it work??. If it was a manual choke.. what was the lower hole in the intake for? Unless someone tried to alter the intake for a choke setup?.. I'm confused..
