I found a 312 in a local salvage yard. I don't have room for the motor but I'd like crank. The engine does turn over. If I loosen the connecting rods and push the pistons to the top of the bore, will that get the rods out of the way so I can drop the crank? I'm thinking it will but have never done it.



The engine is in a '59 F350. If I remember correctly it is an ECZ-C block with ECZ caps. The heads are C1TE with low ratio rockers. If anyone needs truck stuff or anything else on it, let me know. If I can get it out my door quickly I'd consider getting the whole engine. Otherwise, I need more storage space before I can take on more engines.

The crank can be pulled, the rods pushed to the top solves the rod problem.  But it requires a lot more work.  The timing chain has to be removed, and the trans pulled back, pull the clutch and flywheel.  To me, it would be less work to pull the engine.

Yes it will. After you get everything unbolted & the pistons pushed up you have to turn the crank as your pulling it out to clear the rods. I've done a few in my younger days when things didnt quite stay together. Also a bit of trivia, the last piston (4 or 8 I cant remember which) is the only one that will come out the bottom with the crank removed. Learned that lesson the hard way when I had to replace a crank & found a loose pin on one. My old man showed me that one and bailed me out again.

I think when it's all done you would rather just pull the engine but give it a try.  Lots of guys do it, I see it all the time, when they go to put them back in they nick the heck out of the crank with the rod bolts.

What's the rest of the truck like?  I was looking for an F-350 of that vintage one time.

Charlie, get the whole thing if the price is right, I'll take what you don't want. 312 blocks are getting hard to fine and alot of guys want them.

By the way I have a lead on a complete 57 merc with 312 down south of the airport, I may need you to check it out.

I haven't taken a very good look at the entire truck but it's probably a good platform to start with. Whatever sort of bed it had is missing. It will need a new drive shaft. The cab is there but I don't remember how complete it is. I believe the axle and all of the suspension components are still there. I don't think it will be worthwhile to ship to California. For shipping and the purchase price, you can probably find the same thing over there.



It will be a lot easier to pull the engine.

I'm going to get the whole engine tomorrow. First I'm going to see if I can stuff it away satisfactorily. I've been thinking about it all week and it's potentially a running 312, and it's at one of these salvage yards where the prices are set across the board, they don't care what it is or what it came out of. If it's a 4 cyl, its one price, if it's a 6 cyl, it's another, etc, so the price is very good for a potentially running engine. To disturb it will not be the best move, with all of the extra work involved just to get the crank.

Son of a b!7(h! I went to get it, and the truck was gone! So hopefully some other person I told about it got it, otherwise, another one is gone forever.

Last weekend I did get the 2v intake, distributor, and oil pan. My plan was to hold them for ransom, i.e. a crank if someone got the motor. Yeah, like that would work. So it's not a total loss. I found a '62 Mercury Meteor today with a Y. I got the carburetor, distributor, dual exhaust manifolds, and oil pump.

It has a B9AE block and C0AE heads, 2v intake. So the engine seems to have been swapped, if they have the year right. I was just checking block numbers on mummert's site and it looks like B9AE could be a 312. Maybe I'll go pull the pan tomorrow. I'm busy tomorrow with some steel for a workbench I'm going to build, though. Does anyone know what the VIN would be for a 312 in a 59-62 Mercury? To get the pan off, it will need to have #1 at tdc, right?



This air cleaner housing was in the car. I can't find the lid. I don't know if it is correct but it did have a Ford label on it. Is this valuable? I don't need it to take up space unless I can turn around and sell it easily. It looks like it is in pretty good condition
